Chapter 26

London

Jenna was messaging her brother when Leo opened the lounge door. “You need to come and meet Curtis Grantham; he’s in the sitting room.”

Jenna didn’t want anything to do with meeting his barrister or the court case, not when her greatest desire was that he was found guilty. She wished she could go to sleep, and when she woke up again, it would all be over.

“Why do I have to meet him?”

“Just come, would you, and stop arguing. He wants to explain things to us all as a family.”

She followed him through the hall to the sitting room. Bridget was hovering by the door and opened it for them. No doubt she’d have her ear to it once they’d gone inside.

Avery and Susan were already sitting on the leather Chesterfield when they entered. Both Avery and the man sitting in the chair opposite stood up. The man holding out his hand was thin and small and looked to be about sixty. He was clearly eccentric, going by his attire, which included a waist coat with a pocket watch, and a grey moustache that was curled at the ends.

“This is my wife, Jenna,” Leo said and she shook his hand.

“Pleased to meet you, Mrs Montgomery, I’m Curtis Grantham.”

Avery indicated to the seat he’d vacated. “Would you like to sit here, Jenna, next to Susan?” She took her seat. Anything was preferable than sitting near him.

Bridget cleared her throat. “Can I bring some refreshments?” she asked Susan.

“That would be nice. Would you like tea or coffee, Mr Grantham?”

“Coffee, thank you. Black, no sugar.”

Jenna wanted to laugh. Bridget wouldn’t be able to listen in if she had to go and fetch coffee.

As Curtis Grantham took his seat again, Jenna glanced at a deathly pale Susan at the side of her. Something wasn’t right about her, which could well be the looming trial. Whatever she thought about Susan, she loved Leo and must be desperate thinking about the possibility he could go to jail.

The barrister continued, “I’ll come straight to the point as to why I wished to speak to you both together,” he addressed her and Susan. “As I’ve already said to Leo and Avery, I’m confident we can get the case dismissed and the jury discharged if not that first day, then certainly the next. We’re going for a complete dismissal due to the lack of any hard evidence.”

Susan, in true Drama Queen form, raised a hand to her chest, “But why are they bringing the case to court then. . .?” She seemed to struggle to find her words, “. . . What’s the point in even having a trial?”

“The point is, a man has disappeared and is most likely dead. The police have an obligation to search for him, and despite not having a body, they have reached the conclusion he’s been murdered. They’ve built a case which they’ve take to the Crown Prosecution who have endorsed Leo’s arrest and subsequent charges. The fact he’s been allowed out on bail, works in our favour.
